IT'S GONNA BE A HOT SHOW

....

The History Of the DMC DJ Championships

DMC's World DJ Championships, sponsored internationally by Technics
and Ortofon, has grown through the years and the formats of the
competitions have developed along with the demands. Originally meant
to be a DJ mixing battle, DJ Cheese in 1986, introduced scratching in
his routine, changing the course of the DMC battles forever. Since
that time, the prestigious Technics / DMC World Champion title has
been the most sought after by aspiring DJs / turntablists worldwide!

The only equipment permitted in the Technics DJ Championships is
Technics SL1200 turntables and are Technics EX-DJ1200 mixer. No other
equipment is allowed. The DJs are allowed a period of exactly six (6)
minutes to impress the judges. The same rules are applied to all
competitions around the world.

It is the inspirational performances of the world champions that will
go down in the history books and will always be remembered – DJ Cheese
(USA '86), Chad Jackson (UK '87), Cash Money (USA '8Cool, Cutmaster
Swift (UK '89), DJ David (Germany '90 & '91), Q-Bert & the Rock Steady
Crew (USA '92 & '93), Roc Raider (USA '95) and DJ Noise (Denmark '96).
In 1997 Canada's fifteen year old DJ A-Trak stunned the world by
winning first place and the coveted gold turntables in Rimini, Italy.
Then for the next three years DJ Craze from Miami, USA was the World
Champion. In 2001 the Championship was won by Plus-One from the UK and
in 2002 Japan's DJ Kentaro took home the gold. 2003 saw the gold
turntables once again traveling to Canada when Toronto homeboy DJ
Dopey won. In 2004 the gold went to I.Emerge, another great American
champ.

Many great names have taken part in the Technics World DJ
Championships over the years. Some of the UK top entries to the DJ
competition have included Carl Cox and Tony De Vit. The Italians will
point to their top DJ producers such as Zappala, Claudio Coccoluto and
DJ Professor who all made their mark in the competition. Sweden had
Rob'n'Raz, Denmark had Cutfather and Canada had Nick Holder back in
1989 and the Ninja Tune wonder Kid Koala, who won the Montreal
Elimination back in 1996.

TO ENTER THE COLUMBUS HEAT OF THE DMC BATTLE - DJs SHOULD GO TO WWW.DMCWORLD.US

New Rules & Regulations

DJs must perform solo - no teams are permitted
Contestants are the ones allowed free in all American Battleground heats.

Technics SL-1200 /1210 turntables will be supplied at each competition.
If competitors prefer to use another brand of mixer (no effects
allowed) it must be supplied by the competitor.

Only Ortofon cartridges and stylus (any model) are permitted.
Competition Ortofon cartridges will be made available for DJs that do
not have a pair of their own.

Competitors supply their own records, slipmats and headphones.
DJs are allowed to compete at a maximum of 2 American Battleground
Eliminations per year.

Competitors will be allowed a period of exactly six (6) minutes each
to compete.
Competing DJs can only use:

Two (2) Technics turntables
One (1) audio mixer (with no effects)
Two (2) Ortofon cartridges and stylus
Vinyl records

The first place winner of each American Battleground Elimination will
compete at the 2006 DMC USA FINALS in Chicago IL.

The first place winner of the 2006 USA Final will represent the United
States at the 2006 DMC DJ Championship WORLD FINAL in Paris, France.

JRAWLS

The producer that gave you the classic hit Brown Skin Lady by Mos Def
and Talib Kweli on Rawkus Records.

The producer behind the hit duo Lone Catalysts that brought you the
classic album Hip Hop on BUKA Ent.

The artist that brought you The Essence of... in 2001 on
Superrappin/Groove Attack.

The year was 1992, a couple of decades after Kool Herc pioneered the
musical portion of the hip-hop culture by extending the breakdown
beats. It was in the latter part of the year that I was given the
considerable pleasure of meeting and starting a friendship with the
man known as J Rawls. Now when I met J Rawls, he had already realized
that production was where he wanted to be, and was in the early stages
of nurturing his art.

Several years prior, J Rawls, along with two of his friends from the
block in Columbus, Buka and Duane, started off like most at that age
did, rapping the lyrics of "La Di Da Di". A few equipment purchases
later and the group "Dope Beat Specialists " was born. J Rawls, known
as Dynomite then, was a rapper and did the beat box. The group made
music purely for the love of hip-hop and for the love of music. Being
formed in the Midwest, quite a distance from New York, the idea of
getting signed and having a "deal" was about as likely as winning a
multi-million dollar lottery prize. As J Rawls will tell you, "...We
did it because we loved it. We did it because it made us feel a
certain way and there was nothing like hearing your voice on tape..."

Now I know that there are several of us hip-hop heads out there that
got the bright idea to make our own remixes when we were younger - to
become dub mixers, with our dual tape decks we took current songs and
made them our own, simply by recording bits and pieces onto blank
tapes in a planned pattern, matching the beats. J Rawls was on
another level even then, finding the original scores that created the
hooks that we jammed to then.

Again, let J Rawls tell it: "...we had our dad's old records that we
grew up on... I can't describe to you the undying excitement when me
and Buka found our first loop... Kool and the Gang 'Wild and Peaceful'
- the jungle boogie joint that EPMD had used. Man we went crazy...
HIP-HOP showed us that an old James Brown loop was really not that old
when you put a fat kick and snare over it..."

I started this bio out with the reference to Kool Herc, because I feel
that J Rawls is one of the cats in hip-hop who has taken that part of
the music and made it his own. His own personal growth in producing
the music, at least from my viewpoint as emulated that of hip-hop's
own, especially the beat-making. During our college years at the
University of Cincinnati, I had several opportunities to watch the
growth artistically. I would love, and still do, to be in the studio
with him, watching the piece take shape, like a painter with a blank
canvas, J Rawls would take a sample, and add this shade of bass, or
this hue of a horn, or a tone of treble, and all the while adding the
touches that distinctly mark it as a J Rawls production.

Professionally, his years in Cincinnati were good as well. Through
his Lone Catalysts partner Jermaine Sanders, who he met through Buka,
he met MOOD, The Five Deez, and Hi-Tek. With Five Deez member Fat
Jon, J Rawls is one half of the group 3582. Through MOOD, J Rawls was
introduced to Talib Kweli, and as all true heads have the Black Star
album in their collection, you know J Rawls was the mastermind to the
beat behind "Brown Skin Lady". Some of the artists J Rawls has worked
with include Masta Ace, The Beastie Boys, Wordsworth, Jonell, us3, and
Venus Malone.

This is just a beginning to the vast amounts of albums, singles,
collabos, and guest appearances that J Rawls is to be credited with.

Illogic-

Illogic erupted into the Columbus hip hop scene when at the young age
of 16 he claimed the 1996 Columbus Hip Hop Expo MC battle surrounded
by what would come to be the core of the emerging bustown sound. High
school crews ran through, and stage after stage left gasping for
another breath of truth. Illogic dropped his debuted in 1998 on
weightless recording "Unforeseen shadows". The release was a landmark
show featuring Can Ox, Aesop Rock, Rjd2, Blueprint, Mhz (Camu &
Copywrite), Atoms Fam…..the movement had started..

Eight years later Illogic has shared the stage with Rakim, Casual,
Psalm One, Atmosphere, Eyedea, Brother Ali, The Roots, Common, One Be
lo, Modill, Royce Da 59, and many other nationally recognized acts.
His diligence in the studio is nearly unmatched, unleashing 5 studio
albums in 6 short years.

Top Speed : will be one of our judges for the dj battle

as well as DJ for an exhibition Bboy battle between
Smooth Criminalz and Zulu Kings

He will also be going head to head in an exhibiton battle against DJ
Spare Change (the Chicago DMC regional Champ)

DJ Top Speed is highly regarded as a Hip Hop Icon in his hometown of
Indianapolis, Indiana, the Midwest and all across the National board.
Some have went so far as to call him the "Hip Hop Encyclopedia". He
began collecting records in 1980 and has so far accumulated well over
80,000 LP's, EP's, 45's, etc. making him quite the well rounded
DJ/Turntablist. It was B Boy-ing that got Top Speed into the DJ
business breaking with Chad Tinsley and Brian Mays that made up the
Galactic Rockers Break Crew.

It wasn't until 88' that Top Speed actually got his DJ handle. The
name was suggested to him by members of the D-Kor Crew; Ron Minor
(Indiana Jones) and David Woodard a.k.a- Baby D Fresh. Top Speed's
first appearance was at the Melody Skateland 5101 W. Washington owned
by Ron Minors Dad. Speed went on to Deejay at the Sticks & Stones
Pool Hall on Morris St. from 91' until 92'. He then started appearing
on WHHH 96.3's Freestyle Mix on late Saturday nights from 95'-96.

Starting from 97' Speed has acquired an impressive showcase of
trophies from multiple tournaments he's competed in. In 97' he won
The Hip Hop Showcase Battle, in 98' he won the Universal Center DJ
Battle and the Coors Light City Game G Beats competition. In 01' he
was Guitar Centers Spin Off competitions Midwest & East Coast
champion. He has also been the resident Break DJ of Scribble Jam
since 97'.

Top Speed was invited back to WHHH 96.3 to spin on the Mikki Fikki Mix
& The Chop Shop in 01' where he is still currently a resident DJ.
Recently he was invited to participate in the Freestyle Sessions in
Longbeach, CA where he spun with top turntablists such as Q-Bert,
Jazzy Jeff, Fingaz, Element, Steven Flex, Mar, Unique, and Abel to
list a few. He has also recently became the Vice President of
Turntablistics.com- an upcoming Midwest Underground Connect.

DJ SPARECHANGE (2005 SCRIBBLE JAM DJ CHAMP and 2006 Chicago DMC Regional champ)

DJ Sparechange will go head to head against Dj Topspeed in an
exhibition dj battle. The two are close friends and the results of the
battle will be up to the crowd. Undoubtedly both of them will come
with the OG heat and the match will be to close to call.

Battle Stats:
Hot Spot Spinoff (November 2000)
Breakoff (May 2001) 1 st Place
Antioch DJ Battle (November 2002) 1 st Place
BHB4U Hip Hop Expo (March 2003) 1 st Place
Guitar Center Columbus Prelim (May 2003) 3 rd Place
Chicago DMC Regional (July 2003)
DJ Battle Tour Columbus (April 2004) 3 rd Place
Guitar Center Cincinnati Prelim (May 2004) 1 st Place
True Blue Skate Park DJ Battle (May 2004) 1 st Place
Guitar Center Cincinnati Store Final (June 2004) 2nd Place
DMC Cincinnati Regional (June 2004) 3 rd Place
Scribble Jam (2005) DJ CHAMP
DMC CHICAGO REGIONAL (2006) 1st Place

DJ Sparechange's first real interest in hip hop came in 1984
attempting backspins to Chaka Khan and Melle Mel. About 13 years later
I started spinning. I played around a lot with the pause buttons on
tape decks and did some crude attempts at mixing and scratching having
two speakers playing different music and sending them back in through
the mic prior to getting my first mixer in May 1997. I really credit
my beginning to Lil' Kim, my favorite rapper's appearance on the Funk
Flex Vol. 2 Mix tape was the only reason I bought it and ever since I
heard the way Flex put it together I was hooked. I started out with
the Radio Shack 19 inch mixer (where the cross fader clicked in the
middle), a belt drive table that took 30 seconds to accept a record, a
couple of portable CD players, and various cassette decks. When I
first started I was pretty ignorant and thought just about everything
I did I had invented. I bettered my equipment gradually getting an old
direct drive pioneer turntable, then a pioneer mixer and CD player,
and finally getting two 1210's in late 99. I started putting out mix
CDs in April of 99 and want to be involved in every aspect of the art
(clubs, mix tapes, battles, and rockin for MC's etc.) and not limit
myself. I love commercial and underground and just want to be
entertaining and creative in just about everything.

LA QUEST

La Quest is a band that recognizes its roots, yet comes completely
fresh by combining the respect for where they came from with a newness
and vitality unique to the Urban scene of their time. They combine
influences that range as far back in the past as 1950s Motown, Soul
and Blues, to present day Hip-Hop, R&B and Jazz, and to the future
with an original vision thats a synthesis of whats to come. The unique
sound that results was explained in a recent article in Columbus Other
Paper by staff writer Rick Allen:

Local quintet La Quest opened the show, blending Lauren Hills soul,
Mos Defs hip hop, and Portisheads atmospherics to a surprisingly
enjoyable effect. May 18th, 2006

The diversity referred to in this statement reflects not only the
sound and influences of the band, but also of the band members
themselves. A glance at the members bios reveals that theyve all come
from relatively different backgrounds to arrive where they are today.
A quote from bassist Jon Mitts seems to sum this idea up from the
bands standpoint:

Id like to think thats what La Quest is all about. Bringing a huge
range of influences together that all types of people can groove to. I
guess thats what music is all about is bringing people together.

i wouldn't care if fisher price sponsored it but thats shitty to require a certain brand of needle in the rules. i think that speaks volumes about their market share if they have to enforce a rule like that. i'm curious how entrants will react to that one?

they provide orto needles if contestants don't have em. I would assume they will provide nice ones since they wouldn't want competitiors on stage complaining about losing on account of some bunk needles. Hopefully it doesn't hold anyone back. From the competitors I've spoken with so far none seem too displeased with the rules..

side note ... I've use M447s but thats cause the stylus only costs $27 to replace

the needle is one of the most important tools of a scratch dj, and they're being limited to orts. which as i recall dont have a 'scratch' version. they're geared to club djs. maybe something new came out??? i have a religous dislike of orts because i find when i screw them in, one channel seems to not be working right. stanton headshells, never happened (regardless of the cart), again the only reason i have orts is my old roomie sold me a pair cheaper than 1 stanton 680 cart would run. sometimes i regret not just buying a 680 because of the odd problems i have. i just want to screw em in and they just work...... in stereo.....

6 days out ...

Just got the prizes and giveaway stuff .... fat pile of goodies indeed

will post pics tommorow, should have a complete list of competitors soon

I have seen and heard a few tidbits of different djs sets, although most are staying guarded with their routines, from what I have witnessed this competition is going to be nuts... juggling, crab scratching, behind the back, over the top, beat making, record bending, chopping, screwing, slicing , dicing, icing, and just all around getting jiggy with it. Can't wait to see each of these djs tear it up for 6 mins. Super qualified hotness, and I'm only bragging cause it's on their behalf. every competitior deserves your utmost admiration for having the self confidence to put their balls on the line ....

witness the quickening ...

This saturday, it's only like 2 and a half hours of your life away ...

At least one Cleveland native representing ...
DJ Wild Kyle

also Mr. garbs the Infinite is alleged to be enroute

hope a few of you make it out
