Do you think the time of Last Call should be changed?
Yes, earlier to midnight. Damn drunks! You should be at home!

No, it's just fine the way it is. Don't want the rabblerousers having too much fun.

Yes, making Last Call later to 4,5, or 6am would bring additional tax revenue to the City and would help foster nightlife growth. Plus, I want to party longer!

There shouldn't be a "Last Call." 24-hours is the way to go.

Has the topic of why Cleveland's last call is at 2am ever been brought up to the City or State for reconsideration?

Has there ever been an organized effort to try to change the time to a later time?

Just curious.

In Cleveland, liquor has to be off the bars at 2:30. Most bars give last call at 2:15.

In Columbus, there is a Cabaret law (Dance License) that states "no dancing" after 2:30 except holidays. If you the Cabaret Law doesn't apply to you, it is fine. The Outlands, just outside city limits, has afterhours.

In PA (or at least Pittsburh) isn't liquor done before 2? 18 year olds are not allowed in the same room as drinkers, either.

In some cities in Indiana, they can only server liquor out of airplane styled bottles.

I'm curious exactly how many states in the US *DO* actually allow consumption past 2:30.

IL (at least the chicago area) serves until the clubs close (usually like 5-ish) I'm trying to remember what NYC was like. Screw last call. Folks should be able to get their booze whenever they want it. There wasn't a last call in the club I went to in Germany, and I didn't notice anyone in worse shape than you'd see here.

NYC was 4 or 5am. Arc did not have a liquor license, but went way into the next day usually.

Miami was 4 or 5am, with several places like Space that had 24-hour licenses.

I think neuspeed is right, I remember Chicago clubs still going at 4am. Also, he's right on Europe's take: I don't remember there being a last call in Rome, either, and everyone seemed to live normal lives.

BreaksOwnYou can probably correct me if I'm wrong, but I remember getting rounds at Buzz in DC really late.

Ok peepz who have lived elsewhere...Denver/Colorado? Boston? Seattle? San Francisco? LA/San Diego? Austin? Houston? New Orleans? Atlanta?

san francisco, seattle, and denver are all at like 2ish. i thought san fran would be really loose and it turned out that they are stricter than here. in seattle, places close and lock up by 2:30 . .. it's a strange feeling.

This is fascinating.

I just found a table of largest 50 US Cities and their bar closing times.

This site I found suggests that there some statistical correlation between closing time and alcohol-related deaths.

What it doesn't address is the "walkability" and availability of public transportation in those cities.

Very interesting, Amy. Basicly what that table says is that ITS ALL THE SAME! %38-44% is not much of a difference.

My opinion has always been this:
There are nightclubs.
There are afterhours.

When afterhours got big, nightclubs got hit. People started going out later. When you used to have a packed dancefloor by 10, you now have to wait til at least 12 or later.

We have argued this before and it is really only a matter of opinion, but I like the idea of taking the party from one point to another. This keeps venues fresh AND it keeps the crowd fresh. Its like walking into a club at 10pm and everyone is already fucked up from (from the band they had early, from the insane happy hour party, whatever) and ready to go home. The break in the night between venues would be like one giant breather and it would allow for djs to play their sets to a captive audience ready for action on a whole new vibe.

With that in mind, I proprose this idea:

A new class of liquor license (for afterhours or for bars around factorys) which has a downtime of 12am-3am. I think that this type of thing would be more palateable by legistlators and it would create a new unique nightclubbing experience where the afterhours joints could make money.

Factories?

I think we're in a new economy ... Are there the manufacturing jobs in Cleveland that there were 40 years ago?

Most third shift people I know are in call centers as either sales or service, hospitals such as health care workers, or another servicing industry such as transportation.

exactly.

In my little hometown of Bucyrus there are at least 10 bars I can name whose livelyhood depends on the 3 factories they are located next to. Prolly 30 bars in Crawford county alone. I can't fathom the amount in Cuyahoga county.

Oh geez, what's up with last call at 1am in Arizona? It was nice being able to drink in Nevada 24 hours. Also the open containers law are non-existent there. Walking down the street with a yard long Margarita is the life. I think all the biergartens stop serving at a certain time in Germany, maybe it's different when you're at a nightclub. The drinking age is technically 18 too, but it is rarely enforced. No one cares if you're 16 and you decide to down a few hefeweitzen at the local pub.
