Why isn't this a POLL type question?

I like both... and I actually own more Floyd records on vinyl... but if I had to choose, I like the Dead more.

I saw them twice, once when Jerry was alive and once last Summer. The first concert I hated until they did the Drums and Space drum jam... then I was hooked. That was just so primal and really sounded like acoustic techno to me.

I also like the fact that they have upbeat songs (since I love HOUSE, this makes sense), and that they blend their songs together at the live shows. They basically do "dj mixing" with live instraments...seamlessly mixing their tunes together into one flowing piece.

Personally, Floyd is kind of a downer...more somber. The Dead is uplifting, and overall more dynamic.

I vote for Floyd...Deadheads although interesting are a little too bizarre for my tastes...and I never really got into the Dead's music. Pink Floyd's music can be very metaphysical(drugs are optional when listening) like my boy Prince!

Though I like both, its no contest, Pink Floyd takes it. How can you beat a band that produced an album that oddly goes along with The Wizard of Oz. Laughing

In all seriousness, Floyd was a huge influence on the music I play today. I'm sure I wouldnt be into EDM like I am if it werent for them. All the trippy synth lines of Dark Side of the Moon. The pure fucked up lyrics and composition on The Wall and even older stuff off Relics.

I've never really been a fan of either but I've never even heard any Grateful Dead songs so I'd have to vote for Floyd.

The Dead.

I know more pink floyd stuff than grateful dead stuff, but the people I know who are into the dead are way more colorful.

I think of "stadium rock" and "big hair" when I think of Floyd. I think of hippies when I think of the Dead.

I also agree with Derek on the energy thing. Pink Floyd never seemed to go anywhere, and Dead was more Dynamic.

I actually used to make fun of all my Dead Head friends in High school, being a punk rock skater kid. And I liked Floyd more at the time, BUT over all I have to give it up for the Dead. The are much more musically dynamic and span a much larger "sound". Never thought I would say it but the Dead get my vote.
Being from Richfield I got to spend MANY Summers hanging with all the Dead Heads that would take over the town when there was a show, it was a really cool memory and I actually learned a lot about different music. Even though I never went inside the Coliseum to see the shows I spent a lot of time in the parking lot, camping grounds, etc...(guess what I was doing???)

easy choice here... dead all the way Cool

i luv all the soundscapes the dead paint throughout a set, floyd though i like them too seem to have a lot more somber dark, trippy, and sometimes depressing sound throughout.

the dead took it everyhere, from deep and moody, to upbeat, to bluegrassy, to "black hole" type dark trippy jams (i don't know why but i call them black hole jams) the way the dead jammed out especially in the early "drums > space" segue's was pure raw sound and was a concept that was never explored to the depth that the dead took it. i luv "china cat sunflower > i know you rider" it gets me everytime. also, american beauty is a CD that stays in my player throughout the entire summer, it is THE soundtrack of a sunny day (along with the countless live sets)
Very Happy

Floyd, because they had cutting edge synth work back then and plus Syd Barret was a badass before he went insane.

12-5...new math?

from my personal perspective having see neither band live...on a compositional level there are few bands that are even in the same building with Floyd...their stuff rivals many classical composers IMO.

BTW if you've never heard dark side of the moon on a quardaphonic setup you don't have a clue of how that album can sound. it literally becomes three-dimensional...and that was long before surround sound. I've listened to it on modern surround setups (good ones) and they don't hold a candle to the way that album sounds when surrounded by four big speakers (two sets of stereo speakers hooked up to two amps...one in front and one in back...if tuned correctly it's mind-blowing).

Floyd. I favor the structure, instrumentation, and emotive aspects of their music. The video tape "Delicate Sound of Thunder" (which has yet to be put on DVD) was a huge influence for me. I saw them at Ohio Stadium (1994 I think?) and when they sang "Great Gig in the Sky" I had goose bumps over every inch of me. To this day that remains one of the most powerful musical experiences I've had.

Apples and oranges honestly--but in the end I'm down with the Dead.
I think the early Pink Floyd stuff is amazing though. Overall, I think the Dead did a better job of improvising and making good music in the long run. I'm not down with David Gilmour's stuff like Pulse, it's a little too stale. This reunion thing might be the ticket though--who knows.

PF "Umma Gumma" or "Metal" over most GD...

"Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun" mixes with house nicely..."Live at Pompei" is a fantastic music video. Plenty of electronics...

But, GD otherwise hands down...
