I came across a New York Times article in the Arts section about a new style of dancing out of South Central LA called krumping. It kind of remnids me of the old Paris is Burning documentary about vogueing in New York City or the newer movie Bring it On.

Turns out there is a movie coming out this summer about krumping called Rize. It looks pretty interesting and I will probably go see it.

Quote:

The kids use dance as an alternative to gangs and hustling: they form their own troupes and paint their faces like warriors, meeting to outperform rival gangs of dancers or just to hone their skills. For the dancers, Krumping becomes a way of life – and, because it’s authentic expression (in complete opposition to the bling-bling hip-hop culture), the dance becomes a vital part of who they are.

Breakdancers did that more than 20 years ago.

Krumping = epileptic "breakdancing lite"

Dance off! Dance off! Dance off! Dance off!

Actually, I saw a special last year on Mtv about Krumping (it was probably something like - "True Life: I'm a Krumpster" or one of their reality shows) which featured Tommy the Clown and how he started this whole dance craze. If memory serves me correct, he was an old b-boy/gang banger who wanted to save the lives of neighborhood youths by teaching young kids the rather novel idea of having dance off's instead of shoot outs. It looks like it's really getting some attention now.

In the B.E.P.'s video "Let's Get It Started", Missy Elliot's "I'm Really Hot" and in the movies "Be Cool", Krumping was featured. It really looks like it takes some talent to do -- I, on the other hand, have very little booty popping skills and actually would have to have an epileptic seizure in order to remotely be doing it right. Bring on the strobelights!

A group of dancers from the movie are on Jay Leno right now.

It looks pretty interesting but it doesnt appear to be all that dificult.
It definitely a very aggressive from of dance that I could see as being a combination of a bit of moshing and breakdancing.

I think I'll grab that movie when it comes out on dvd if not see it in the theater.

EDIT: David LaChappelle, the director of Rize, is on the Craig Ferguson show tonite too.

David LaChapelle is a phenomenal photographer... check out his website...

I believe there was a link to it earlier...

Amazing surreal stuff... but I still stand by what I said... the purpose and jist of this was done years ago by breakdancers...and they did it better.

They still do.
