 Post Post subject: dub recommendations?

i don't know if anyone on this board knows this stuff, but i'm hoping for some help here.

looking for good recommendations for dub sounds which straddle the original jamaican producers (king tubby, mad professor) and the berlin dub experiments (basic channel, rhythm & sound, maurizio, burial mix).

i really love the new rhythm & sound set on burial mix and i'm looking for more sounds like that. the jamaican stuff is pretty good, but a bit too sunny. the german productions are much deeper and more focused on production values. i've heard that prince far i is a good place to start.

anyone into this stuff? thanks in advance.

So are you looking for more minimal dub? Vox or no? There are so many varieties so not really sure where to direct you, but since you are mentioning R&S you should check out some of these artists / records and comps:

Mad Professor vs Jah Shaka
U Roy & Francois K "Rootsman"
Paul St. Hilaire
Twighlight Circus Sound System
Stereotyp (g-stone actually)
DubStylist
OverProof SoundSystem (hit or miss with these guys)

If you can find this comp, you might find some gems:
Heavyweight Dub / Killer Dub on Blood and Fire (2000)

Select Cuts also released a number of compilations and singles of re-worked dub classics entitled "Select Cuts of Blood and Fire" where you might find some goodies.

There's really a ton of it out there...I kind of chilled out this year on the dub tip so not sure what is new and hot. But hope this helps.

thanks, jude.

some of the r&s stuff i have has paul st. hilaire featured quite a bit -- i like his stuff a lot. i don't care if it's new as much as finding similar sounds to the burial mix label.

i'll give these a spin. thanks again for the list.

Oh and check Beat Pharmacy. Also for some of the hip-hoppy dub, check the new Meat Beat Manifesto (which is amazing as far as I am concerned), some of Spooky's dub production and Groove Corp. It's all hit or miss though.

as mentioned, Twilight Circus is fucking sweet...

also, Jack Dangers' solo shit like "Hello Friends" and the last Meat Beat Manifesto titled "In Dub" are absolutely brilliant electronic compositions.

Congo Natty drum-n-bass. Deepest basslines. Produced at the source. Rumoured to be sold from the trunk of a car. Very nice if you can find it.

Also highly recommended is:
Reggae, Rasta, revolution : Jamaican music from ska to dub
Schirmer Books ; Prentice Hall International, c1997.
Other Authors:
Potash, Chris, 1964-
ISBN: 0028647289 (alk. paper)
Description: xxix, 290 p. ; 24 cm.

Ready about King Tubby. Read about sound systems as big as a city block. Read about Lee Perry drinking gasoline and cranberry coctails, burning down his studio, then living in the ruins. The book is a collection of short articles written in various magazines.
