Man some harsh words back and forth here... I didn't think this forum was meant to dog on other peoples' musical tastes. Not that I am complaining, I find it somewhat amusing because I too hate trance. But remember that peoples' passions should not be harshly ridiculed... to their faces at least. We all have our opinions and it's always good to remember that any art form that motivates people has at least SOME merit, even if mainstream society has blown it out of proportion. The intense emotion one person gets from listening to trance is identical to the emotion that another person gets from listening to drum and bass. And let's not forget that as other people mentioned, trance is how many people get into EDM. Some of us just happen to grow up and move onto Drum and Bass Bye

OOooooh snap!

Oh word, dude I totally agree. I'm not saying "this is how people get into EDM and let's just roll with it". In fact, I think all of us like myself who spin non-mainstream-techno-trance are either subtly or in my case blatantly trying to combat this trend. It's time that when you say "electronic music", people don't immediately think of 4-4 trance. My point was that while it is the case that this trend still exists, we have to give respect where respect is due. To undercut or dis the current trance fans would be a dis-service to the scene for the long run, because some of those trance fans may emerge as afficionados of other EDM through experience and exposure. 3 years ago I was bumping Paul Van Dyk and thinking "THIS is real music". Had someone belittled my tastes back then, I might have grown disillusioned with all EDM in general. Part of what is attractive about the EDM scene is the supposed notion that it is all-embracing and accepting, and I'm just saying that those of us who have in fact grown past trance should approach it with a more big-brother attitude, rather than a bully attitude. A better solution than "trance sucks" may be "OK, so you like trance. Well, check THIS out". So I totally sympathize with your sentiment, but I think that the longevity of the scene depends on a mature outlook and the ability to understand that trance will indeed cease to be the world-dominant EDM choice given enough time and enough talent. But let's not make fun of 3-year olds for acting like 3-year olds.

actually, 90% of the events i do at b side are 18+. any younger than that doesn't make sense in a bar atmosphere.

also, i don't this event is being thrown to educate little kids about edm, it's being held to make money.

And there you have it folks.

Then again, making money isn't a bad thing. It is all about what you do with the money you make and how you live your life.

???

I wasn't being a bigger person... I thought the discussion was important enough to have its own thread instead of 4 pages of it in this one.

Just meant "bigger" as in realizing the need to separate the two topics

Back to the whole rhythm and trance thing...(at the risk of being annoying)
Anything can have rhythm, even rain drops.
It's really just a sound followed by a rest, technically speaking.

Yeah any of this genre super-sensitivity talk, post-1999, doesn't hold a lot of weight with me honestly. Almost every element of electronica has elements of each other in it these days.
