My deepest sympathies to Jay and his family. I think Kurt undeniably died a hero and I'm sure they're very, very proud of him. I wish them the best in this very sad time.

So terrible.

What a mess of a society we live in that dedicates 5 seconds of news time to a death of a soldier, followed by 60 seconds to a promo about Tom Cruise and Katie Homes on Oprah.

This is the same society that complains about having to pay excessive taxes on liquor and tobacco all the while public schools are being shut down due to lack of funding

Ohio Soldier Killed by Roadside Bomb
May 23, 2005, 06:37 AM

ORWELL, OHIO (AP) -- A soldier from northeast Ohio was killed in Iraq by a roadside blast near the Abu Ghraib prison, his family said Saturday. Thomas Schamberg learned Friday that his son, Army Sgt. Kurt Schamberg, had been killed the day before in Baghdad.

"He said, 'What we're doing is right, and the job we're doing is right,'" Thomas Schamberg said of his son. "And you have to support him on that."

He said his son wasn't afraid to put his life on the line. "He would do what he had to do to protect his soldiers. He'd rather it be him than one of his men," Thomas Schamberg said in a telephone interview.

Kurt Schamberg, 26, was on his second tour of duty in Iraq, with the 10th Mountain Division based at Fort Drum, N.Y. He had returned to Iraq Jan. 25, and on April 12 was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained when he was patrolling around Abu Ghraib.

A 1997 graduate of Grand Valley High School in Orwell, Schamberg joined the Army after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Thomas Schamberg was the mayor of Orwell, about 40 miles east of Cleveland, and now lives in Melrose, Mass.

Kurt Schamberg's mother, Pamela Lindsay, lives in Gillette, Wyo. Katie Schamberg remembered her nephew as fun-loving. "He was talented, he was comedic, he was just everything," she said. "He loved life, and he was proud of what he was doing ... and you have to feel that that's a good thing."

this has hit me harder than anything ever, i truly appreciate everyone that has kind thoughts about Kurt. I don't believe in the Iraq mission, but Kurt did and, in that, my family and i have consolation. he will be missed dearly and always remebered young, funny and everyone's friend. his funeral and calling hours will be held in orwell, ohio, where he was raised and loved by the small town. I believe (and all matters have yet to been settled) that Paine funeral home will be the caretakers, i have no address for flowers or cards to be sent but i'll be able to pass that on in a day or two.

and please don't use my brother's death as a political platform, he gave two shits about politics, the media, or what anybody thought, he just thought little kids in a foriegn country could use some help.

Jay, I truly apologize if my post came off as me using it as a platform... it was just a reaction to the news story I saw that morning. Your brother is a hero and the world could use more people like him.

He deserves accolades.

If there's anything we can do for you over here in Cleveland, let us know.

Jay,

Long time since we last talked, but I too have been very taken back by the news. Kurt will always be remembered as truly being his own person. He was never afraid to stand up for the small guy. What he did hold dear to himself were his own convictions. He would put himself out on the line for anyone or anything that he believed in.

Kurt was my best friend growing up, from K-12. We used to make silly movies, play sports together, we even wrote our own computer game in BASIC - "EEKTREK"... come high school, we used to sit on the front porch at the old house and listen to really good music. Kurt had an ear for that type of thing, the really soulful music, from Ray Charles to Harry Connick... to the first tapes of Father MC and Dana Dane that we used to listen to...

I will be coming home to Orwell this weekend, I look forward to seeing you and the family.

-Ed

I have never been prouder of Orwell as I was this weekend. I took some pictures around town, and the support that the community gave to the Schamberg family was awesome.

http://thehotshit.com/kurt

I posted up the pictures that I took around town of the signs of support.

nice pics ed. it was quite an emotional couple of days and the outpouring from the orwell massive was overwhelming. people came from all over the country and waited patiently in line for hours to pay their respects. it was something that i will never forget and the Schambergs were truly grateful for.

RIP Kurt
