Thanks, dave Smile

Then to put this better...

"If it is your goal to tour the world as a dj, then you better have some solid production skills to back it up because that is going to be the #1 reason people know you".

Correct?

I don't disagree that being being a successful producer will get you dj gigs -- it certainly will. There are many levels of success and I don't necessarily think "poduction skills" is related to sucess as a dj. Maybe I'm way off base, but I don't think Average Joe sees a difference between producer/dj these days. I think in order to get the masses back into dance music and clubbing, they need to learn to "trust the dj" and this will cause the paths of dj and producer to diverge - expecially with the introduction of "on the fly production". You cannot aruge that electronic music has gone beyond the scope of just "dance music" (years ago), and I don't think it is impossible for your fans of sasha (and the like) will eventually be content to be shoegazers.

you gotta know how to scratch and/or mix really well

put some time and effort into it, travel around the state
cleveland is not the end-all, be-all of ohio

make a good demo, put it online, hand it out to everyone

don't talk a lot of shit about how good you are

I don't think you are off base. I think it really comes down to marketing for a DJ. Whether that marketing comes in the form of hit productions, mix CDs, television coverage (think Skribble), print coverage, or any other form of repeated, widespread exposure, if your name becomes familiar to a wide audience, you have a better chance of being more successful. Average Joes go to hear whoever they think is someone worth hearing, and it often has less to do with the quality of the DJ as much as the exposure of the DJ (e.g., Oakenfold). For the Average Joe, production could well be completely irrelevant, with exceptions like ATB and Darude.

Perhaps there are two tiers of success: underground success and mainstream success. The paths to achieving each are likely very different, and once you achieve mainstream success, it can be very tough to retain your underground audience. Underground success usually requires a great deal of integrity and creativity, whereas mainstream success usually requires just the opposite.

How to get a DJ gig?

I thought it was sleeping with the promoters. Damn, I knew I was doing something wrong. Well, at least they bought me breakfast.

There are few female promoters in CLE, and almost no female DJs.

So who is sleeping with whom?

why does it have to go down like that?..

But anyways..

I think attitude, the way you carry yourself, your creativity, and your envolvement within your local scene has alot to do with how your bedroom djs get booked. I know about 90% of djs that play today, would love to make it big in the world, be known, and get paid to do what they love best. It just seems as if its a glamore show to me right now.. and if I were still a closet dj, I wouldnt want to be apart of it.

I could (and I should) go on to how I feel about this, but Im limited seeming I have to work here in about 10mins.

Here's my question.

Funky Charms was a good idea for closet djs to get out and play, but when you have one huge event like this happening every year, and its the only time you get all these djs in your face.. how are you suppose to take these guys further into our scene and let them be known? Its almost like playing the roll of a scout, rather than needing to enjoy the sets being played at the event.

I guess Im trying to say there should be some better way of getting these guys out to where theyre all heard, and can be enjoyed in a way that we're all respecting....

And to Euphorix, I love you guys. Dont think Im here bashing on yinzers.

Very Happy

Ill be back to post further thoughts I had.

heres my problem with the whole funky charms thing...be warned...some may consider this to be hater speak.

they charge how much at the door every year? 20bux? 25bux? how much does it cost for them to put on that show? next to nothing...do the dj's get paid? hell no! thats not right...if u are throwing what turns out to be a huge party every year and thats the only party u seem to do every year...you better pay your talent

i really hate to be negative on such an institution in cleveland...but that has been bugging me for a few years now...especially hearing all my friends horror stories about having to litterally fight for a 30min time slot at the party...and if posting this means ill never get booked at funky charms...i really dont care...it needs to be said and things need to be righted.

<sarcasm> That's why I get booked at all the hot spots. <sarcasm> ...and I booked myself at 2527...so that must make me a great masterbator. I can't remember if I took myself to breakfast, though.

We prefer to book local djs who are regular faces at local events. Not just our events but whatever happens to be going on. It is also a bit of a put off when you only see someone if they are behind the decks.

Another way to get gigs is to ask. Probably half of the people that spun at our events just simply asked if they could (in one way or another).

But I would think alot of closet (bedroom) djs have a tough time coming out anyways. Considering theyre probably wondering what people would think, or if they suck, or didnt sound good. It would be really cool to make them feel comfortable and able to come out more. =)

I meant it is a put off when the only time you see a particular person is if they are performing - but if they are not performing then they wont go to the show.

Who is having house parties in Cleveland? That is where I first had a chance to perform in front of people...Don't forget there is always the beatmatrix or raver's edge on wruw 91.1 fm where a beadroom dj can have huge exposure over the air waves...

Signing off to leave the bedroom...

Ramzi
