Junglist,

You know you could of just asked me man, theres nothing to it.
I assume your talking about the file size of your finished mix. It really just depends on what quality level & file format your going for.

By the way theres no such thing as a small .wav file. Your average hour long mix could be anywhere around 600-800 MB.
Your really only going to get a smaller file size by encoding an .mp3 file or something along those lines. The higher the quality=the larger the size.

Just bring your shit over this week & well hook it up to my cpu.

Are you recording in WAV or MP3.

Either way, most good audio software has a SAVE AS or EXPORT feature. (Cool Edit, SoundForge, etc). Save As MP3.

You can even use mainstream MP3 player like iTunes and MusicMatch to convert to smaller formats.

Finally, you can also acquire a "slicer" program like mp3slice which can break up one long continuous mix into seperate tracks.

HTH,
-Paul

For one mono won't really do too much for the file size, it will just have a combined right and left channel.

If there are any effect used, panning, flange, etc, it will probably sound pretty muddy.

I record in mono using Sound Forge 6.0 and haven't had any problems with effects sounding muddy. I have noticed that I have to stay pretty low on the db meter. Peaking around -11db has been working great for me. Afterwords I run the mix through wave hammer. Like I said I have had no problems using this method at all.

Thing is...(the most important reason to me) when you record in mono...

it's not in stereo.

sounds rather dull...

the only problem with that is u loose all your drum dynamics....the wave hammer is good for getting everything loud...but louder isnt always better...if u cant record around -3db without distortion with your current soundcard, u should probably look into an entry-level m-audio or emu sound card...it'll be the best 100 bux u ever spent.

the problem with mono, as moose said is it makes tracks sound really flat...most producers fly their cymbals, pads, sound effects, and even sometimes the mid-rangey part of their bass around the stereo field with ping pong delays and spatial seperators...if u do your stuff in mono, u might have stuff coming in and out...depending on the track it might be a cool phasing effect, or it can be a total mess...also, alot of producers pan their drums like they are setup in a standard drum kit...without the right side u can lose alot of defination in your snare, hi-hats, and hi-toms...u wont hear it while your recording(cuz u are monitoring in stereo)...but when u play back that mono file, it'll be noticable to the enthusiasts ear...especially if u are playing records that people have heard...im not trying to flame u or anything, its just something u should keep in mind...if u are trying to get noticed with your mix cd, the devil is definately in the details.

the nice thing about mono is it saves alotta disc space.

recording in MONO depends on how you would execute it. If you only recorded ONE of the two channels, you'd be missing the opposite side of the 'mix'... but if you record both left and right into a SUMMED MONO, you can introduce tons of phase / polarity issues and is generally not encouraged.

EXAMPLE. Make a stereo file with left channel a hard panned 1khz sine wave. And the same for the right channel. now invert the phase of one channel. Played together, they're still ok, because each channel can play the 1khz sine wave independantly. But sum them to mono, and they cancel one another out. Leaving you with nothing.

Thats a glorified example of certain effects/and natural ambiences of music that don't work in mono.

End of Lecture.
