What are your views on this topic?
I already have a slick little Sony Vaio desktop at home, but I've heard great things about the Mac's in general.
Im debating about picking up a G4 Laptop down the road.

What are some of the differences between the two? Mind you I am Mac Illiterate so please, if you could explaine thouroughly.

Much appreciated,
Tronix

Mac's = more predictable.

In my opinion you spend more time actually working then just waiting on the damn thing to work.

I use both pc & mac but I don't have enough cpu power on my mac to be able to use it for everything exclusively.

I think for the common person a pc is fine .... and the past debates on software compatibility are bogus with everything that's out there today.

I am a huge mac supporter, using them both at work and at home.

I also have a pc for my job. And boy, do I hate that thing. But it's also old and slow, so maybe it's not a fair comparison.

I agree with the poster who said that you'll spend more time working and less time making it work - they are so easy and maintenance free.

I bought a new mac for home a year ago, and they still sell the same one new. In 4 years, I'll still be able to load complicated program upgrades (like Photoshop) and they will still work fine. They just don't go out of date as quickly, IMHO.

It depends on what you're using it for and personal preference. Macs, for the most part, don't come preloaded with a ton of software. This has changed over the years a little bit, now there's more, but to do anything significant you'll have to buy software.

Some websites don't support Macs - it depends on where you're going to be going online if that'll be a problem or not. I run into a problem with it at work.

A funny store about mac vs. pc that kind of illustrates my point... I was on another forum, and one of the members was debating whether they should buy an iPod or a different MP3 player. One member posted back that Macs are crap and that she would never buy anything made by Apple. So I asked her why, and she was telling me that they are too expensive, etc. All the usual reasons that people don't like them.

I was telling about the good things - the longevitiy, the fact that 90% of viruses are written for PCs, so it's less of a concern when you own a Mac, that they are just easier to use and you don't have as many day to day problems with them.

She came back and said, well, if you know what you're doing, you don't have those problems.

And about 3 days later, her friend came online and posted that she was having computer problems and wouldn't be online for a while. LMAO.

I didn't remind everyone of her previous words, but I sure wanted to.

I have just recently within the past year become a Mac user. I purchased a Dual 1.8 G5 and have no regrets about it. It can do everything I want it to do plus more. I mainly got it for musical reasons because I did a lot of reading up on this same topic and the majority of the articles i came across said that Macs are the way to go when it comes to Music/Graphic Design/Photography/Art.
I believe with a PC you have more control with the program your running, but with a Mac it is more user friendly and the programs keep getting better.
On the software side, Mac software can be expensive as hell as to are some PC programs. If you go the filesharing route you can get almost any program for a PC cracked, but Mac is another story. You gotta know where to go obtain cracked software. Some rograms I believe still have no working cracks for the Mac like Logic, Cubase, and Reason.
All in all I believe that it depends on what u are trying to acomplish with your computer.

I'm a Mac freak but because I've been using them for graphic design and music production from day one. PCs also have something to offer so IMO it comes down to personal preference, but remember: You get what you pay for.

I've noticed that a lower-end Mac vs a comparably priced PC will generally ship with more nifty software (video editing/mp3, etc...) and require less additional stuff. Processor speeds are about the same.

I think that high-end PCs and Macs perform at a similar level and it's just too close to call... as I whisper, "pssss... go with Mac."

i use both mac and pcs.

my desktop is a pc, i use it mostly for school work/researching/number crunching since most of the apps i use for engineering are made for the PC. Damien is right, software is cheaper and easier to acquire for pcs...

on the mac side, i recently acquired a 500 mhz g4 powerbook as a gift and have started using it more frequently than my PC. eventhough its almost 4 years old, it still runs silky smooth. apple really puts pcs to shame when it comes to efficiency.

i also use it for DJ'ing with the Ms Pinky software. It has never crashed during a set and i get lots of positive comments about how organic the tunes sound.

the Mac OSX interface is definitely prettier and more efficient to use when doing normal desktopping stuff. windows feels really dull and clunky after using OSX.

Linux code is messy as hell. FreeBSD! :-D

As hardware goes, it's a toss up between Mac and PC.

As operating systems go, OSX kicks the crap out of Windows. Far more stable and more feature-rich.

I would love to make the switch to Mac....but my love for PC gaming holds me back permanently. I don't have the money to buy a dedicated PC gaming machine AND a mac for every other use, so until they start releasing everything on Mac, I'm going to be a windows user.

I use both-- but Mac for 2 reasons...

The excellent and standard color of their monitors. As a designer I've found that very important as time goes on.

I also like Macs because it seems I don't have to spend as much time keeping it spyware and virus free.

Mac World SF '05 here I come!!!

I swing both ways now. About 3 years ago I would have been the average Mac-basher, but then I was forced into situations in which I had to use Macs routinely. At first, I fought it. Then OS X came out and it wasn't so bad. Days turned into weeks. Weeks turned into months. And wouldn't you know it, I found myself at home switch-hitting.

LOL.

Seriously, I've been working with both for a few years now. I bought my first Mac last June, G4 Powerbook. OMG, this laptop is a beast. Original poster, go get it. It's worth it. Learning curve is non-existent. The only glaring con about macs is all their help sections. Whoever writes those needs to be shot. They're terrible. As far as software support, that point is non-existent these days. You can find a solution to everything you did on the PC. From a programming point of view, OS X is FAR superior in security and stability to Windows. It's based on BSD/Unix/Linux. Unix users are at home on a Mac now. All that said, personally, I do not see myself purchasing a Desktop Mac anytime in the forseeable future. I am a big fan of third party hardware and the ability to customize a PC to the exact way I want it. The only reason I can think of ever buying Mac desktops or iMacs, etc. would be if I ran a business and needed some workstations that I could purchase by the bulk. I voted for Mac on the poll, though, just to help make the sides closer. I no longer view the situation as either or, same with video game consoles...just get what have a need/use for. To be fair, while people out there still pull the "there's no software for Macs" excuse, there's also the argument on the Mac side: "if you're an artist or musician, you are in FAR better shape with a Mac." That's garbage as well. The vast majority of musicians and artists do use Macs, because it USED TO BE TRUE, that needed software was developed more for those. In addition, those who learned on Macs are now the teachers, so they teach what they know. You can do anything your little hearts desire musically, or artistically on either machine. Sure there are some programs that one has and the other doesn't (e.g., Final Cut Pro-Premiere Pro), but there's an equal alternative all the time. While Final Cut is quite a bit better than Premiere (arguably), I can seemlessly continue editting or manipulating the files from FC in Premiere if necessary. I love the luxury of having both though, for situations in which you'll need to create cross-platform materials or need to work on the 'other' machine for whatever reason.

Hope this helps as I finish up this typing on my pride and joy Powerbook.

Right on man, very informative. I'm gonna head out to the Mac store soon and check them all out.

Thanks

just a little sidebar...my one buddy has a g4 733 with like a gig of memory...but it couldnt run more than 4 or 5 channels of kontakt in logic 6 or 7....he had to go out and buy a g5 to get logic to work the way it was supposed to on his g4...im just saying this to illustrate that macs arent always the end all solution ppl sometimes think they are

pcs are great if u put good hardware in them and have the know-how to do a good clean windows install...in the end it really isnt the computer, the os, or the platform...its whos operating the machine.

ive had the pleasure of working on both and have come to this simple conclusion. maybe my studio experience doesnt mean much to anyone but here you go....

word processing.homework.browsing for porn = PC

producing music = MAC

That is just an ignorant comment.

I've heard great stuff produced on both. Damn theres people I know that can sit around a PS2 and produce a pretty nifty track thru a freakin game.

It's personal preferance what system to produce on. A true artist and talent will emerge no matter what they use. Just depends on what he/she is more comfortable using, I don't think "porn" has anything to do with it. Talent is talent.....
