Has anyone tried Great Lakes' barley wine? I'm usually not into the barley wines due to the sweet flavor but GLBC'S was awesome. It has to be one of my favorite beers from their brewery. Also, I just realized the Ohio City Oatmeal Stout is only 4.8% but I'm still very much looking forward to trying it.

it is quite possibly the greatest non-GLBC beer I've ever had...Monday will be my first in a few months.

holy shit the first sip was a palate shock Laughing

the smoaked indian was a fucking hop monster. i'm not privy to extremely hoppy beers, but as my mouth got used to it it was quite enjoyable and nicely toasty at around 6% abv with all the boldness and character stone is known for.

enjoying this right now from their take-home cooler:

stone cali-belgie ipa - as i said, i'm not a big fan of IPAs, but as it was explained to me, the hops in this are toned down by the type of yeast used in the brew process - sure enough, this is an IPA i can really enjoy! fucking delicious. hop enthusiasts will be disappointed Wink .

also got to stop by a karl strauss microbrew location!

http://www.karlstrauss.com/PAGES/Beer/Start_Beer.htm

got the sampler and some eats - the eats were really good and so was the beer. the stargazer IPA was freaking awesome (again, less hops and a SUPER citrus-blast finish, amazing) as was the woodie gold. the hefeweizen was poor and the red trolley was like eliot ness light. they had a decent belgian brown and a dry-hopped brown (another hop monster x_x) on tap which were also decent.

quality!

that being said, i can't wait to come home and sit down to some peace and quiet with a dortmunder Very Happy

For the IPA lovers, if you haven't had Bells Hopslam (particularly on draft) GO HAVE ONE. Best IPA I've had in a long time. Lots of hops but not overpowering like Ruination, and a smooth, almost creamy finish. It's a 10% abv imperial, but it doesn't come off insanely sweet like some other imperials do. Very highly recommended. Note that it's currently on draft at the Tremont Tap House along with the rest of the Bells stuff (of which I'm admittedly not a huge fan so it surprised me that this was so good).

Note as well that the food at the Tremont Tap house is GREAT as well, and can be had at reasonable prices (we got out for about $60 for two beers each and dinner).

Yeah, I don't love their standard Amber Ale, and the Oberon is just above ok with me, like a B or B-, but I have heard numerous recommendations on the Hopslam. Like you said, proper IPAs don't have to be like Ruination at all to be top of the line...subtlety and complexity are key.

Love Hopslam...but hate the $17.99/6pk price that goes along with it. Dont let the price scare you though, its worth it. usually treat myself to a case a year.

i like how they release it january...gives my palette a well-deserved break from the stout and barleywine season.

Southern Tier's Gemini (double/imperial ipa) is tasting great too..its a 50/50 unfiltered blend of Unearthly and Hoppe.

The best thing about this year's batch is that they didnt dip each bottle in that wax that was a 50/50 blend of titanium and concrete...almost had to get stitches trying to open it

I'm not a huge fan of southern tier (some of their imperials taste too much like alcohol to me) but that sounds good. I'll have to scare up a bottle.

And yeah, the price of hopslam is up there, but worth it.

Hmm I actually just saw these at my friendly neighborhood drive-thru. I'm just deciding if I want to get it or Bear Republic XP Pale Ale. Gosh I dunno.

I got all excited when I got the newsletter regarding this replacing the Holy Moses (rip), but then I saw all they did was jack the name from one seasonal and used it on another. Obviously I'm dying to try it, cuz I never did have it when it was called Hale Ale, but I'm disappointed it's not the Grassroots Ale I came to love in '05/'06-'08, which was an unfiltered wheat beer brewed with lemongrass. Fucking so goddamned tasty on a nice 84º day...

To this day, no brewery compares to GLBC. For consistency of quality, creativeness and the sheer volume of selection, all your base are belong to them.

And whoever bumped this thread must now deliver a refrigerated 12pk of Two Hearted to my residence sharpish. No, seriously...I'm so not kidding.
