For the IPA lovers, if you haven't had Bells Hopslam (particularly on draft) GO HAVE ONE. Best IPA I've had in a long time. Lots of hops but not overpowering like Ruination, and a smooth, almost creamy finish. It's a 10% abv imperial, but it doesn't come off insanely sweet like some other imperials do. Very highly recommended. Note that it's currently on draft at the Tremont Tap House along with the rest of the Bells stuff (of which I'm admittedly not a huge fan so it surprised me that this was so good).

Note as well that the food at the Tremont Tap house is GREAT as well, and can be had at reasonable prices (we got out for about $60 for two beers each and dinner).

thread/post resurrection: IMO after being on an IPA kick for a couple years now this is still the best of breed. Hell, Valerie even likes it and she's very picky about beers. If you like hops go have a couple. If you like blacking out have a 6-pack Smile

Nice to see local fare doing well on an extra-local scale.

This year was good but Thirsty Dog 12 Dogs of Christmas was slightly better.

I also heard thirsty dog's brewmaster came from GLBC?

I too tried some other Christmas Ales this year - I liked Thirsty Dog's, but not more than GLBC's. (This year's GLBC Christmas Ale > Last year.)

For IPAs, lately, the Goose Island IPA is damn tasty goodness. Probably the most drinkable IPA I've had. (And I like the hoppy-as-shit IPAs, which this isn't one.)

seasonal. They brew it around the beginning of the year I think? most of it's gone by april aside from specialty places like north coast (manny had a little left as of last weekend).

Southern Tier - Unearthly is my favorite as of now. That 10% will grab you by the junk though.

I second the awesomeness of this beer. nom nom nom.

currently in my fridge:

brown-ish ale. 12% abv. lots of flavor and complexity. nom. more than 1 = unsober though...I think the 12% _might_ be conservative.

last weekend i went up to grand rapids, mi for the release of Founder's KBS (Kentucky Breakfast Stout) and scored 2 cases of it. they only had 250ish cases available at the brewery at it sold out in under an hour.

its a stout brewed with chocolate and coffee, then aged in Heaven Hills bourbon barrels 60ft below ground in a gypsum mine for 8+ months.

complex and well balanced at 11.2%

seriously, though. if anyone here gets out this way, check out the Toronado in the Lower Haight.

40+ on draught...always rotating. Also, The Gate in Park Slope, Brooklyn has got a similar vibe, but with less brews. Both are serious.

I just wish the Tap House lasted longer than 6 months before it was taken over by a full douce clientele. :/

Firestone Walker, Russian River Brewing Co., & Marin Brewing Co are all solid breweries out here. Bear Republic is just over an hour away...worth the excursion for the brews.

Oh, and The Monk's Kettle in The Mission - A level brews and really good food.

tried this. Just couldn't get myself to like it. at all, which is strange as I like belgians and ipas. IMO indigo imp's jester is a better belgian/pale ale combination. YMMV though.
