Just got this letter... I'm not sure if this means we loose any data or not. Either way, I'm not doing ANY upgrades until we are on the new box.

Additionally, since PHPBB 3.0 is now in BETA (and I would like to upgrade to 3.0 when it is released) I might hold off even longer.

When 3.0 is fully released, I will need help designing a new skin.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

The web / shoutcast box is over 2 years old now, and it's well over due
for an upgrade.

Current Hardware:
P4 - 2.4 ghz Celeron - 1 gig ram
80 GIG HD (15 gigs free )
100 mbit Ethernet
OS: FreeBSD 4.10 w/Plesk 7.0.x

New Server:
Pentium 920 2.8g hz Dual Core (2x 2M cache) - 1 Gig DDRII 667 ECC
ram
1 x 250 GB SATA II drive
100 mbit Ethernet
OS: RedHat Enterprise Linux ES 4 w/Plesk 8.x

The new server should provide double the current processing power, and
triple the disk space.

My timetable for the migration is as follows:
July 1st - 8th: Test / Configure / Optimize / Initial Restore of
Live Data
July 9th - 15th: Customer feedback / Review / QA / Fix any site
related problems
July 16th - 20th: Update Live Data #2 / QA / Prepare for Final
transfer
Sat: July 22nd: Stop Services old box / Update DNS --> Point to new
box --> Update Live Data #3
Sun: July 23rd: Switch over Complete / Shutdown Services old Box

We are moved to the new box Smile

Revised Hardware Specs:
Dual Core AMD Opteron Processor 170 (2.0 ghz / core).

Now, when I get time, I will upgrade versions and do some of the much needed mods (aka Calandar, Disabling Sigs, Record Ip of new users (so I can ban those nasty spambots), Last Seen, etc.

SOme of you have gotten timeout errors... here is the explanation from the host.

Over the past couple of days, there have been some problems with the web server slowing down to a crawl, because of pdflush writing to
frequently. It seems Linux 2.6 is abit aggressive for Virtual Memory,
compared to FreeBSD.

I made the following changes:
vm.swappiness=100
vm.vfs_cache_pressure=0
vm.dirty_expire_centisecs=15000 vm.dirty_writeback_centisecs=30000
vm.overcommit_memory=2
vm.page-cluster=100
vm.min_free_kbytes=32768

The box appears to be working normally now.

I was just kidding.

I'm currently putting together a powerpoint/excel presenation on Cost of Finished Manufactured Goods -vs- Cost of Goods Sold at Months End Inventory. And relating them to profitable standards using:

1) Income Statement
2) Balance Sheet
3) Cash Flow Statement
4) Retained Earnings

You see can see were I'm going insane right were the Balance Sheet (Financial Accounting) mixes with the Cash Flow and Cost Accounting and into how the company retaines their earnings on a daily, monthly and yearly basis.

God I need to get laid!!!

Hehe lets get technical.....
vm stands for the virtual memory manger object in all there calls
so
swappiness is a setting about how often in terms of a score that we want to swap, kind of an on what memory % of in use should we get to before we start swapping.
vfs_cache_pressure=0 <- Not totally sure on this one, vfs is the virtual file system but Im not sure what pressure would be for.

vm.dirty_expire_centisecs=15000 vm.dirty_writeback_centisecs=30000
this deals with how long we can keep something in memory befire we we either force the write to the pagefile to and mark the paged out record as clean or just expire the paged record and do a repull from main memory because we no longer trust the paged record as current.

vm.overcommit_memory=2 <- a multiplier on how much memory to report to the system as availible vs real phisical memory.

vm.page-cluster=100 <- how many disk clusters to use in a page

vm.min_free_kbytes=32768 <- how much memory to force the system to keep available for swapping procedures., essetially the memory line that will trigger pageing to take place.
