Spooky Heads for Metal This Time Around

Noted hip-hop producer and artist DJ Spooky is set to release another album, this one a collaboration with Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo. So why should you care? Spooky isn’t just a trip-hopper spinning tables, but has a wide range of tastes and many of his previous albums have had jazz influences and guest spots from some of jazz’s more adventurous artists. Admittedly, Slayer may not be exactly jazz-influenced, but we’re all curious to hear what this album will sound like.

Spooky’s last album, 2002’s Optometry, was widely hailed for its originality and its musicianship – All Music described the album as “fully a DJ outing and fully a jazz record” and JazzTimes wrote a review in the October 2002 issue (you can read it here). Released by Thirsty Ear, Optometry features a band comprised of Thirsty Ear jazz artists William Parker, Matthew Shipp and Guillermo Brown, as well as Medeski, Martin & Wood’s Billy Martin, Joe McPhee and Carl Hancock Rux, among others.

Spooky and Lombardo’s upcoming album is titled Drums of Death, and rather than featuring avant-garde jazz artists, is set to have guest spots from Living Colour’s Vernon Reid and Public Enemy’s Chuck D. You can get mp3’s from this album, as well as Optometry, at Thirsty Ear’s website.
