MILES MAEDA (World Evolution, San Diego :: Smartbar, Chicago)

Miles Maeda was one of the pioneering members for the Chicago music scene in the early 90s. Alongside his collegues Derrick Carter and Mark Farina he helped shape the city's club and rave scene 92-95, which is quite rare for someone not being a Chicago native. His classical background and training inspired him to experiment in many different styles and genres which shone forth in his prolific studio recordings and unique live performances. This allowed him to have a certain artistic freedom that spawned projects which were to enrich Chicago for many years...

MILES MAEDA (World Evolution, San Diego :: Smartbar, Chicago)

THE NEW HOUSE SOUND OF CHICAGO TOUR
...a new mix by Miles Maeda...

At one point in time I owned about 10 different cassette (all 90 or 110 min) mixes by Miles Maeda. Do not be led astray by the "house" or Chicago emphasis in the post and on the web. I've heard him mix most styles of music from downtempo, drum and bass, techno, experimental, and of course house.

As far as the studio mix tapes go...Top notch. They really set the standard...

For you downtempo/hiphop fans seek out “Keep on Making My High” & “A La Peanut Budder”, house heads check out “Peaceably So”, and techno/acid fans “Xanxadu”.

I've seen him spin 4 or 5 times - usually some kind of vocally house.

He was the last dj to "fool" me right in front of my eyes. I was sitting there watching him and he stops the record but the sound keeps going. This was in my second or third year of beatmatching so I was past the “what does a mixer do”.

A dj's dj. Some of the records on his mix tapes from 1997 are still showing up on mixes released in 2005. I picked up his vinyl on the Cincy label Dirtyloop with Perry Ellis on the b-side. I sort of stopped following his mixes after the move to CD (just too many vocals – maybe that was an era?).

Quite a nice person too...With the yoga instruction and all that...Last I saw on the Internet he was also running a DJ "school" or apprenticeship program.

It is true for me to say that DJ Dan set the hook in 1995/6 – but it wasn’t really DJ Dan - more or less getting “tuned in” while DJ Dan happened to be playing on a mega system at a mega rave in KY punctuated by exploding pyrotechnics.

Miles Maeda reeled me in. I am not sure if I’d be listening to electronic music right now if it wasn’t for those mix tapes.

It is also true to say that in the latter half of the 1990s for about a dozen of us in Southern Ohio our music world revolved around those mix tapes…

No matter what he plays (even if it is vocal cut after vocal cut) it will be interesting to hear what he is up to know.

There are some mixes by Miles on this site:

http://www.epiphic.com/archivedAudio.jsp?&jsp=/archivedAudio.jsp

Also, be sure to check out the Karl Almaria (especially "It's Fun Again!"), Mystic Bill, and the short Tortured Soul live mixes.

Great link!

Check here for the tracklisting from "A La Peanut Budder" and here to order one...I suspect that it is a CD version of the cassette recording.

Miles is one of my all time favorite dj's. The guy is so extremely versatile, it is sick. Saw him last year in Miami, and he had the whole patio just under his groove.

Man its been way to long since I saw this cat out and about. Mos Def suggest posting this up on the mwraves, pbcle raves calander as well. lots of kids used to drive great distances to check Miles out.. many may still. Lord knows I looked em up in SD when I was down there a few yers back.. he's still banging.

On a related note I have a bout 2 dozen mixes of his on tape. I am interested in swapping (no cash). I am after early 90's or late 80's mid west headliners especially chi house and tech from the D. Skip the gabber Wink

BOO YA

As some of you already know, Miles is very deeply involved with Rudra Yoga. He regularly holds class in San Diego.

We have arranged for him to do a free beginning course the day of his show.

It will take place at the Fitworks located in Rocky River...time to be confirmed.

Those who attend this session will also be guest listed for his show at Wish later that night.

Yoga assists us in unifying the mental, emotional, and moving parts of our being, so that our presence is full, our passions are alive, and our actions are complete. It is a celebration of life, the art of living. Come and remove all obstacles and see the show later that night at Wish with a true and wholly free mind!

That is so cool! I wonder if he is a better instructor than Rodney Yee?

Yes, I will be dragging Damon to this.

He certainly educates while spinning...

And sometimes leads stretching after sunrise sets...

My friend from Germany, is really into yoga, is totally straight edge now, and has been trying to get me into it for many months now. He's clubber, too. ...think, we'll check out this yoga class, also. Heck! I'll give it a shot! My friend has nothing but praise for yoga. I'm introducing him to Miles's music, so it'll be a fair trade.
