Downtown Cleveland to Star in Marvel Studios’ The Avengers
Motorists and pedestrians advised of road closures, intermittent traffic delays and alternate routes
CLEVELAND – During the month of August Downtown Cleveland will be transformed into a movie set for Marvel Studio’s The Avengers, which will require road closures, intermittent traffic delays and alternate routes for motorists and pedestrians. On August 8, E. 9th Street from Euclid Avenue to Prospect Avenue will close for the rest of the month. Additional streets will be closed during the month of August. All production is planned to be complete by September 2, 2011.
The Walt Disney Studios/Marvel production is the largest feature film to ever shoot in Ohio and will employ hundreds of Ohio-based cast and crew, and use local service and supply vendors.
“The City of Cleveland welcomes the opportunity to host The Avengers,” says Cleveland Mayor Frank G. Jackson. “This film will provide a boost to our local economy and showcase Cleveland’s assets to the film industry.”
“From my previous experience working with Ivan Schwartz and The Greater Cleveland Film Commission on The Soloist, I knew the city had all of the elements we needed for some of the big action sequences in the film,” says Patty Whitcher, executive producer. “For The Avengers, we
have been working very closely with Mayor Jackson and The Greater Cleveland Film Commission and appreciate all of their hard work and support in preparation for the Ohio portion of our shooting schedule.”
City staff, including the Division of Traffic & Engineering and the Public Safety Department, has been working with the production company as well as a traffic-engineering consultant to accommodate the needs of the film. The following alternate routes have been designed to help
alleviate traffic congestion that will occur due to road closures and accommodate the intermittent traffic delays caused by the temporary closure of intersections.
East 9th Street from Euclid to Prospect CLOSED August 8 - September 1
Euclid Avenue from East 6th to East 12th CLOSED August 15 - August 24
Walnut Avenue from East 9th to East 12th CLOSED August 22 - September 2
South Roadway from Superior to Ontario CLOSED August 17 to August 30
Detroit Superior Bridge CLOSED August 29
Intermittent Closures (traffic will be stopped for short periods of time) will occur at the following intersections from August 8 to September 2:
o East 9th Street and Prospect
o East 9th Street and Walnut
o Superior and West Roadway
