Beneath the glamour of the job, nightclub promotion can be a tough business. It requires creativity, excellent social skills and a whole lot of tenacity-- but the rewards are sweet. Nightlife is an integral part of any society; to be a part of it is to link yourself to your culture in an extremely significant way. And-all romanticism aside- it can be very lucrative and very fun. “Sounds great! But how do I get started?” Lucky for you, young promoter, we have the guide to help:
1. Identify yourself and be able to define yourself to others. Who are you? What types of crowds do you cater to? Who do you want participating in and attending your events?
2. Know your demographic. What is your client looking for? What do they consider cool? Once you know their needs, you can tweak your promotional aesthetic to appeal to them.
3. Network. It’s simple: no one will come to your event if they don’t know it’s going on. Use sites like Facebook and Myspace. Create fan pages. Get in touch with other promoters, dancers and club-goers. The more connections you have, the more in-the-know-- and known about --you will be.
4. Get to know your area. Visit local clubs and venues- for research of course. Decide which ones are best suited to your style and pitch events.
5. Hire DJs, dancers, or any other entertainers and technicians you think will be right for your event. Hire wisely, as they are the backbone of your party. Their performance is one of the key factors in the success of an event.
6. Advertise. Print flyers to be passed out and posted in well-trafficked spaces- local clothing stores, coffee shops, music stores and the like. Get in touch with local newspapers to have your event listed or even perhaps featured in their spreads. Use word of mouth; hire a street team to pass out promotional products. Promote from the day the event is booked to the day it happens. Maybe even advertise perks for showing up like free drinks until 10 or free entry for ladies.
Most importantly, be persistent and creative; promise a good time and deliver. Now, go out and good luck.
